ERCOT summer reserve margins lowered to 7.4%, vs reliability target 13.75%

Gibbons Creek 470 MW coal generation plant notified ERCOT that it will mothball plant prior to summer 2019.

Gibbons Creek attributes;

  • ~22 miles east of College Station
  • Built 1983, 36 years old
  • ERCOT Houston zone
  • Operated summers only since 2016
  • Been for sale since 2016
  • Owned by Texas Municipal Power Agency who is owned by Cities of Bryan, Denton, Garland, and Greenville, TX

This will lower ERCOT summer reserve margin from 8.1% to 7.4%, as compared to ERCOT reliability target of 13.75%.

Subject to changing ERCOT market rules, summer power prices are going to be volatile.
